Who is the new state secretary for the Treasury?

Former chief economist in the ministry of Finance Álvaro Novo is the new state secretary for the Treasury, due to the need to intensify the state's business sector strategy execution.

Former chief economist in the Ministry of Finance Álvaro Novo is the new state secretary for the Treasury; Ricardo Mourinho Félix will no longer be secretary of state Assistant, of the Treasury and of Finance, but secretary of state Assistant and of Finance.

Álvaro Novo was born in 1972, in Estarreja (270 km north from Lisbon), and got his Economy degree in the University of Coimbra in 1995. He pursued his studies in the United States: he has a master in Economy from the Southern Illinois University and another in Applied Statistics from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, which was also where he got a phD in Economics.

Álvaro Novo has been a technical adviser for the Bank of Portugal since 2001, as well as associate and visiting professor in ISEG (Economy and Management Superior Institute, Technical University of Lisbon) and IMS – Information Management School, NOVA University.

He was, in addition, president of the work group of Labor Market Statistics, in the Statistical Council Portugal. In 2013, he wrote, alongside Mário Centeno, minister of Finance, the essay “Labor, a market perspective, from the Francisco Manuel dos Santos’ Foundation, in which they discussed the organization of labor relations.

Álvaro Novo will take office as the new state secretary for the Treasury this Monday, February 6.
