Portugal tourism revenue rises to €1.1bn in August

Portugal’s tourist accommodation sector generated €1.1 billion in revenue in August, up 4.6% from a year earlier, according to a flash estimate published by the national statistics office INE. The increase outpaced growth in both guests and overnight stays, highlighting the sector’s continued importance for Portugal’s economy.

The number of guests rose 1.9% to 3.9 million, while overnight stays increased 1.7% to 10.9 million. Demand was supported by both domestic and foreign travellers: resident overnight stays rose 1.5% to 3.9 million, while non-resident stays increased 1.9% to 7 million, accelerating from 0.8% growth in July.

Among foreign source markets, the UK remained the largest, accounting for 17.1% of non-resident overnight stays and posting growth of 3.4%. Spain ranked second with a 15.6% share and a 5% increase, while France, the third-largest market, continued to decline, with overnight stays down 7.6%.

Poland and Canada recorded the strongest growth among the main foreign markets, with increases of 11.7% and 11.2%, respectively. Overall, the top 10 source markets represented 79.2% of non-resident overnight stays in August, with the Netherlands the only other major market to post a decline, down 1.1%.

By region, the North posted the strongest growth in overnight stays, up 4.5%, followed by Alentejo with 2.6%. The Algarve remained Portugal’s main destination, accounting for 30.1% of overnight stays, ahead of Greater Lisbon with 19.3% and the North with 18.2%.
