Volkswagen says Autoeuropa keeps ID.Every1 plan

Volkswagen told ECO it is maintaining its current plan to produce the production version of the ID.Every1 at its Autoeuropa plant in Palmela, even as the German carmaker reviews factories and cuts capacity across its global operations. The decision matters for Portugal because Autoeuropa is one of the country’s main industrial exporters and employs more than 4,000 workers.

In a written reply, Volkswagen said that “according to the current plan, the production version of the ID. EVERY1 is to be manufactured at Volkswagen Autoeuropa in the future, together with the T-Roc.” The company did not detail the impact of its restructuring on each factory, but it officially confirmed that the objective is to keep Portuguese operations as they are.

Volkswagen also said it is reviewing “everything, including our factories and their cost structures,” adding that it needs to reduce global capacity by about 1 million vehicles a year, including roughly 500,000 in Europe, to support efficient production. ECO has learned that Palmela is not currently considered at risk within the group and is seen internally as an efficient plant with competitive production costs.

The clarification came as Volkswagen executives began visits to European plants to explain the restructuring to workers, with the first meeting scheduled for Tuesday in Wolfsburg, where the group is headquartered. The wider overhaul follows plans to cut around 100,000 jobs worldwide and comes after a sharp drop in profits in the first half of the year.
