Portugal had 181,000 dollar millionaires in 2025, UBS data show, but median wealth fell, highlighting a widening gap between headline gains and household finances.

Portugal had 181,000 dollar millionaires in 2025, up by 6,000 from a year earlier, according to UBS datas, a rise of 3.4% that outpaced the global average of 1.5%. The figures point to continued wealth creation in Portugal, but also to a growing gap between top-end fortunes and the financial position of most households.

UBS said median wealth per adult in Portugal fell 5.4% in real terms to $76,978 in 2025, down from $81,353 in 2024. The bank ranked Portugal 26th out of 56 markets on this measure and said median wealth has fallen 4.4% over the past five years when adjusted for inflation and expressed in local currency. Average wealth per adult stood at $195,761, underlining the gap between average and median wealth.

The report also shows that Portuguese millionaires remain heavily exposed to property and other non-financial assets. Financial assets accounted for 37% of their gross assets, one of the lowest shares in the markets covered by UBS. The bank said this reliance on non-financial assets may limit participation in gains driven by financial markets.

Portugal’s share of adults classified as dollar millionaires stood at 2.1%, below France, Spain and Italy, but above Greece, according to the UBS Global Wealth Report 2026. UBS also said that, unlike Spain, where almost half of adults hold assets between $100,000 and $1 million, the largest share of Portugal’s adult population is concentrated in the $10,000 to $100,000 range, pointing to a weaker middle tier of wealth.
