CP highlighted that this is “an absolute record for the first half of a year”, detailing that the increase “is across the board for most services”, and “particularly notable” in the Regional service.

CP – Comboios de Portugal carried a record number of over 100 million passengers in the first half of this year, up 9.3% or 7 million more than in the same period last year, the operator announced on Tuesday.

In a statement, CP highlighted that this is “an absolute record for the first half of a year”, detailing that the increase “is across the board for most services”, and is “particularly notable” in the Regional service, which grew 133% to 15.3 million passengers.

Coimbra Urban services recorded an increase of 84%, and Intercidades recorded a 48% increase.

Considering the number of passengers carried, Lisbon urban services continue to show the highest figures, reaching around 68 million passengers by June, while Alfa Pendular remained “firm in the market”.

For CP, these results show “continuous growth in demand” for its services and “confirm the attractiveness of the train as a safe, sustainable and accessible transport solution”.

Concerning the Green Rail Pass, implemented in October 2024 to encourage the use of public transport, which costs €20 per month, the transport company says it is having “a major impact on the modal shift to rail”, with more than 315,000 subscriptions sold in the first six months of the year.

Since it entered into force, it says, customers have purchased more than 390,000 Green Rail Passes, and they have made more than 1.25 million travel reservations on Intercidades trains using this pass.

In the first half of the year, CP also highlights the reopening of lines and the strengthening of existing services, as part of its commitment to promoting sustainable transport.

In particular, it points to the reopening of the Leixões Line and the Mangualde/Celorico da Beira (on the Beira Alta Line) and Torres Vedras/Malveira and Malveira/Meleças (on the Oeste Line) sections.

The announcement also highlights the extension of the Andante intermodal fare system to trains running on the Vouga Line, on the Espinho – Vouga and Pinheiro da Bemposta (Oliveira de Azeméis) route.

By June, CP also reported that it had completed the installation of 304 new generation ticket machines in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area and, since July, it has highlighted the increase in Alfa Pendular trains on Saturdays and public holidays, providing more timetables and seats on the route between Lisbon and Porto, a service that it says has been in “high demand”.
