"I don't want to be a hindrance to the party in the decisions it has to take. I have already said that I could never support this government", said Pedro Nuno Santos

Socialist leader Pedro Nuno Santos said early Monday morning that he will step down as secretary-general “as soon as possible” and does not want to “be a hindrance to the decisions” that the PS has to make.

“I will step down as secretary-general as soon as I can, if I can do so immediately, for the simple reason that the party will have to make very important decisions about the relationship it will have with the next government, and my position on this matter is very clear,” said Pedro Nuno Santos, responding to a question about when he will leave the leadership of the PS, adding that he will assess whether he will continue as a member of parliament.

He continued: “I don’t want to be a hindrance to the party in the decisions it has to take. I have already said that I could never support this government.”

“I don’t think the party should either, because it shouldn’t support a government led by someone who couldn’t separate politics from his business, it shouldn’t support a government that has shown itself to be incompetent in fundamental areas of our collective life, it shouldn’t support a government whose programme goes against the values and principles of the Socialist Party,” Pedro Nuno Santos added.
