Mota-Engil signs deal with DP World to build DRCongo deep-water port
According to market sources consulted by ECO, the contract is likely to be valued at around 250 million dollars (around 230 million euros).
On Thursday in Dubai, Mota-Engil signed an agreement with the DP World Group to construct a new container and general cargo terminal in the port of Banana, Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo).
In a statement, Mota-Engil noted that “it has carried out similar projects for DP World in other markets” and that this project “represents the continuity of the commercial strategy” in new projects.
The agreement defines “the execution of dredging works to allow safe navigation to the new mooring line”, on a quay that should stretch for 600 metres.
Similarly, Mota-Engil points out that it will develop an area for handling containers with an initial capacity of 450,000 TEU and a road access link to the existing roads, as well as defining an expansion area for the future.
Quoted in the documents, the chairmen of the two companies welcomed the agreement.
The chairman of the Portuguese construction company, Carlos Mota Santos, said that the agreement “shows the recognition and confidence that one of the world’s largest port operators has in Mota-Engil”.
For his part, the chairman of DP World, Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, said that the port of Banana “is a transformative project that will reshape the trade and logistics landscape of the Democratic Republic of Congo” and that the partnership with Mota-Engil ensures “that this world-class infrastructure is built to the highest standards”.
