Web Summit will have a capacity for 70,000 participants in 2022, below Portugal’s president expectations
The Tech Summit will take up more space compared to 2019, although no expansion work was done last year. The estimated number of visitors is 70,000.
“Next year, we must have 100,000 (participants).” The President of Portugal set the goal for the 2022 edition of the Web Summit, but it will not be accomplished. Almost a year later, not only has there been no expansion of the FIL space, but Paddy Cosgrave’s team is pointing to more than 70,000 visitors for this year’s edition of the tech summit. It’s a comeback for 2019.
“It is expected that Web Summit 2022 can sell out sooner than ever, with the increase in demand, receiving more than 70,000 people in Lisbon,” explains an official source of the tech summit to ECO. By receiving more than 70,000 attendees this year, the event will equal the number of spectators in 2019, failing to meet Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa’s ambition. In 2019, 70,469 people attended.
The only record expected, for now, is the size of the venue. “For Web Summit 2022 we’re increasing the total footprint of the event to the largest ever. Our previous record was set in 2019 at 183,292 square metres. In 2022 we will expand to 204,386 Square metres,” Paddy Cosgrave wrote in early September on the social network LinkedIn.
In addition to the Altice Arena, the event will use “the same space it occupied in 2019” at FIL: “pavilions 1, 2, 3, 4 and multipurpose [between pavilions 2 and 3], outdoor areas between pavilions, the Sony Square, the PT Meeting Center and the FIL Square. We know that the public street between Pavilion 4 and Sony Square will also be occupied, similarly to what happened in 2019,” an official source from the AIP Foundation, which owns the Lisbon International Fair, clarifies to ECO.
