About 56% of Q4 2021 direct investment from Angola arrived via other countries

According to the Bank of Portugal's figures, in the fourth quarter of 2021, Angolan foreign direct investment (FDI) in country totalled €3.896.83.

Around 56% of Angolan direct investment arrives in Portugal via other countries, mainly via the Netherlands, according to figures from the Bank of Portugal (BoP) consulted by Lusa.

According to the banking regulator’s figures, in the fourth quarter of 2021, Angolan foreign direct investment (FDI) in Portugal totalled €3.896.83.

Of this total, €1.683 billion arrived in Portugal directly from Angola, without passing through third countries.

However, according to Lusa’s calculations, the remaining €2.211.87 billion of Angolan foreign direct investment (FDI) was held via third countries.

Based on statistics of direct investment positions by end investor, which identifies the countries that, “ultimately, and regardless of the complexity of the structure of economic groups, control the investment, enjoy the revenues and take the risk,” €1.597 billion of Angolan FDI in Portugal arrived via the Netherlands.

According to the BoP data, part of the Angolan FDI in Portugal also arrived via Luxembourg (€325.38 million) and Malta (€279.22 million).

In this period, services accounted for the largest share (€3.354.29 billion), followed by construction (€54.27 million), manufacturing (€1.55 million) and electricity, gas and water (€0.38 million).
