Azores airports handle more passengers in July than pre-pandemic

The number of passengers who arrived via air in July in the Azores is the highest in the last five years.

The airports of the Azores registered 252,483 disembarked passengers in July, 52.3% more than in June and a figure 15.1% higher than in July 2019, before the Covid-19 pandemic, it was revealed on Tuesday.

According to indicators released today by the Azores Regional Statistics Service (SREA), during July 252,483 passengers disembarked at the region’s airports: 96,324 from within Portugal, 115,404 from the islands of the archipelago and 40,755 from abroad.

The number of passengers who arrived via air in July in the Azores is the highest in the last five years, as 165,833 people landed in 2021, 63,572 in 2020, 219,439 in 2019 and 210,872 in 2019.

“The figures for passengers disembarked increased compared to those recorded in the same month of 2019 (15.1%), pre-pandemic Covid-19, and 52.3% compared to July 2021,” indicates the SREA.

In July, the number of passengers embarked amounted to 235,933, which is also the highest number of the last five years compared to the same period (in 2021 149,566 passengers embarked, in 2020 there were 56,167, in 2019 there were 206,664 and in 2018 197,902).

“Similar to passengers disembarked, the figures for passengers embarked [in July 2022] also show a positive variation compared to July 2019 (14.2%) and 57.7% compared to the same month in 2021,” the statistical bulletin highlights.

In July, there was also a “positive year-on-year change of 36.5%” in passengers boarded on flights between the Azores islands, 51.4% on national flights and “about four times more on international flights”.

Already in June, the Azores had surpassed, for the second consecutive month, the 2019 figures (pre-pandemic Covid-19) regarding overnight stays in tourist accommodation, according to SREA.
