Portugal 9th in EU with most new daily SARS-CoV-2 cases, 3rd in deaths

According to the statistical website Our World in Data, the country's epidemiological situation has improved since three weeks ago, when Portugal was the country with the most new cases in the EU.

Portugal is currently the 9th country in the European Union (EU) with the most new cases of SARS-CoV-2 infection per million inhabitants over the last seven days but is third in terms of deaths.

According to the statistical website Our World in Data, the country’s epidemiological situation has improved since three weeks ago, when Portugal was the country with the most new cases in the EU and second in the world for deaths.

In that period, the daily average of new cases in Portugal decreased from 1,560 per million inhabitants to 996 as of today (Monday). Of the European Union partners, Cyprus has the highest average of new daily cases (2,380), followed by France (1,920), Greece (1,700), Italy (1,590) and Austria (1,120).

At a global level, considering countries and territories with over one million inhabitants, Cyprus also has the worst epidemiological situation to date, followed by New Zealand (2,060), France, Greece and Singapore (1,650).

On the other hand, in terms of new daily deaths attributed to Covid-19, Portugal now has the third highest average in the EU, up from 3.68 three weeks ago to two, and is preceded by Malta, with 3.04, and Greece, with 2.4.

In global terms, looking at territories and countries with more than one million inhabitants, Taiwan has the highest daily average of new deaths attributed to Covid-19 (four), followed by New Zealand (3.23), Greece, Belarus (2.12) and Norway (2.04).

The average number of new daily cases per million inhabitants in the European Union has more than doubled since three weeks ago to 910, and the average number of new daily deaths to 0.94.

The world average of new cases increased from 67 to 114 and of new deaths attributed to Covid-19 stands at 0.22.
