Sonae MC targeted in cyber-attack
The group's website is with problems. Online platform of Continente supermarkets is "under maintenance".
Sonae MC was the target of a cyber-attack, the company confirmed. While the online services of the Continente brand appear “under maintenance”, Sonae’s website is unavailable.
“MC confirms that there was a computer attack on the systems that is affecting some communications on the commercial sites and some services,” the company said in a statement. For now, Sonae guarantees to be “working to investigate the the disruption and restore, as soon as possible, the normal functioning of the activity.”
The cyber attack was initially reported by SIC Notícias. For now, it is impossible to tell if customer data has been compromised.
On March 17, the day that Sonae presented its 2021 financial results, director João Günther Amaral assured, on the subject of cybersecurity, that the company “does everything and more to protect itself”, stressing, however, that “no one can claim to be protected against all attacks”.
“All companies with some prominence are attacked on a daily basis and are defending themselves on a daily basis. That is the case with us. And to date, we have done all that successfully,” he had said at the time.
The topic of cybersecurity has been in focus in recent months, especially after the cyber attacks that hit the Impresa group and Vodafone Portugal, a competitor of NOS.
