António Costa has "vehemently" condemned Russia's formal recognition as independent of two regions controlled by separatists in eastern Ukraine.

Portugal’s prime minister, António Costa, has “vehemently” condemned Russia’s formal recognition as independent of two regions controlled by separatists in eastern Ukraine, and expressed “total solidarity” with the latter country.

This position was conveyed by António Costa in a message in English posted on his account on the social network Twitter late on Monday night.

“Russian recognition of the two breakaway Ukraine regions clearly violates the Minsk accords and jeopardizes Ukraine’s territorial integrity,” the message reads. “We strongly condemn this action and express our full solidarity with Ukraine.”

The announcement earlier on Monday by Russia’s president, Vladimir Putin, that his country would recognise the two regions has drawn condemnation from across the West.
