Exports up 11.7%, imports up 21,4% in July

INE points out that the year-on-year changes registered in July, "resulted from the comparison with a month of 2020 in which the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic was felt intensely."

Exports and imports of goods in July were up by 11.7% and 21.4% on the same period a year earlier, according to data released Thursday by Statistics Portugal (INE).

In terms of both sales and purchases abroad, the highlight was the increases in industrial supplies (up 19.8% and 34.8%, respectively). In exports in particular, with the exception of transport equipment, there were increases in all major categories.

In terms of markets, considering the main destinations of Portuguese goods, it is precisely the transactions with the Spanish market that stand out. In July, national goods crossed the border at a value 10.9% higher than a year ago, and 15.2% more Spanish goods entered the country.

INE points out that the year-on-year changes registered in July, “resulted from the comparison with a month of 2020 in which the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic was felt intensely.” Compared to the previous month, there was a 9% rise in the case of exports and a 6.5% fall in the case of imports.

The deficit of trade balance in goods increased by 662 million when compared with the same month of 2020 (it decreased by €371 million compared to July 2019), amounting to €,493 million in July 2021. Excluding Fuels and lubricants, the trade deficit amounted to €943 million.
