Algarve hotel occupancy hits 76% in August, 17% below 2019 figures

The Algarve Hotels and Tourism Developments Association (AHETA) highlighted that The overall average occupancy per room in the region's hotels and tourist resorts was 76.2% in August.

The overall average occupancy per room in the Algarve’s hotels and tourist resorts was 76.2% in August, a figure that was 17.9% lower than in the same month of 2019, the main regional hotel association has revealed.

In provisional August data compiled by its research office and announced today, the Algarve Hotels and Tourism Developments Association (AHETA) highlighted the national market’s importance in August by recording an increase of more than 50%.

“The national market increased by 50.8% and the external market decreased by 58.6% compared to August 2019,” AHETA revealed, giving as a basis for comparison the last year in which the operation was not affected by the crisis in tourism created by the emergence of the Covid-19 pandemic, in March 2020.

The August data also shows, according to AHETA, that, “in accumulated terms, since the beginning of the year, room occupancy registers an average decrease of 59.3% and sales volume a decrease of 54.8% compared to the same period of 2019.”

AHETA stressed that “the volume of sales fell 36.2% compared to 2019 and increased 10.7% compared to 2020”, while average occupancy “rose 26.9%” compared to last year, in which the effects of the pandemic were most felt.

As for geographical areas, AHETA indicated that decreases in occupancy compared to August 2019 ranged from 24.6% in Portimão/Praia da Rocha to 11% in Faro/Olhão.
