Portugal drops seven positions in the innovation ranking

Portugal falls to 19th, this being the first reverse in the upward trajectory on the European Innovation Scoreboard since 2014.

Portugal went backwards in the innovation ranking. After having been among the most innovative economies, this year it took a tumble in the ranking, coming second to last in the group of moderately innovative economies.

The Portuguese economy was in 12th place among all the European Union economies. It was the last of the highly innovative economies, along with Estonia, France, Ireland, Austria, Germany and Belgium, according to Público.

This year, according to the European Innovation Scoreboard 2021, Portugal falls to 19th, this being the first time it reverses its upward trajectory since 2014. The country is second to last in the group of moderately innovative countries, just ahead of Greece in this group.
