Eurocontrol's projections for Portugal indicate that 2021 will end with 43% of the traffic recorded in 2019.

Aviation was one of the sectors most affected by the pandemic that forced people all over the world to stay confined to their homes. Portugal was no exception and Eurocontrol estimates that national airports have lost around 343,000 flights due to Covid-19.

The total number of flights lost since March 1, 2020, stands at 343,000, according to a report on the impact of Covid-19 on Portugal’s aviation, prepared by the European association.

Currently, 721 daily flights pass through Portuguese airports, which represent only 42% of comparable 2019 traffic. The biggest drop (46%) concerns international routes, which currently account for around 577 per day. Domestic connections, meanwhile, fell by only 21% to an average of 141.

The busiest airport is the Humberto Delgado Airport, in Lisbon, with an average of 317 flights a day. It is also more heavily affected than the country’s average: traffic is still 51% below those in 2019. It is followed by Faro with 162 flights (29% less than pre-pandemic), while Porto registers 153 daily routes (48% less).
