Country’s top two retailers rise in global retail ranking

According to the "Global Powers of Retailing 2020", which evaluates 250 companies worldwide, Jerónimo Martins is the 50th largest retailer, rising five positions.

Jerónimo Martins and Sonae SGPS rose once again in Deloitte’s global retail ‘ranking’, which evaluates the 2018 fiscal year, which ended in June 2019.

According to the study ‘Global Powers of Retailing 2020’, which evaluates 250 companies worldwide, Jerónimo Martins, the owner of the Pingo Doce supermarket chain, is the 50th largest retailer, up five positions from the previous evaluation, while Sonae SGPS, owner of the Modelo/Continente supermarket chains, occupies 155th position, advancing one place.

Leading the ranking were the North American chains Wal-Mart, Costco Wholesale and Amazon, which entered the top three for the first time.

Completing the group of five largest retailers were the German Schwarz Group and the U.S. The Kroger Co., which in the previous ‘ranking’ was in third place.
