One of the most promising companies in cannabis’ cultivation is putting the small Portuguese town of Cantanhede on the global map of the sector. Tilray, a cannabis’s cultivation company for medicinal purposes, has chosen Cantanhede for setting its plantations and that has caught Bloomberg’s attention.

According to the American press agency, Tilray is determined to make the Portuguese plantation its main hub for cultivation, processing, research and exportation in Europe as mentioned in the company’s international expansion strategy. For that, the company holds a certification from the European Medicines Agency and has also defined a new organisational structure for the European market.

Tilray nominated the German Arne Wilkens as Vice-president for business expansion in Europe, who has also been Board member of the German pharma company AiCuris.

The goal is to make both the US and Europe the company’s main markets and change the business focus which is currently more fixated in Canada. Portuguese cannabis has played a fundamental role in that growth plan. Portugal has been referenced several times for providing good climate conditions for the plant’s cultivation.
