Mota-Engil posts record first-quarter profit
Portugal’s Mota-Engil reported its highest-ever first-quarter profit, helped by African mining and a Latin America recovery, while its order book hit a new record.
Portuguese engineering and construction group Mota-Engil reported its highest-ever first-quarter profit, with net income rising 31% year on year to €35 million, according to a trading update sent to CMVM, Portugal’s securities market regulator. The result points to stronger execution in key overseas markets and supports the company’s growth targets.
Revenue rose 2% to €1.394 billion in the January-March period, while EBITDA increased 10% to €234 million, lifting the margin to 17%. The group said activity was driven by mining operations in Africa and a recovery in Latin America, especially in Mexico and Brazil.
In Europe, revenue fell 29% to €90 million, which the company linked to delays in the tendering and award of major projects in Portugal, although it expects activity to accelerate by year-end.
Mota-Engil said its order book reached a record €16.9 billion after signing €1.5 billion of contracts in the first three months of the year. The company said that backlog is equivalent to 3.6 years of activity in its engineering and construction business, giving it longer-term revenue visibility.
The group also confirmed its 2026 guidance, including double-digit revenue growth of 10% to 15%, an EBITDA margin in line with 2025 levels, a net margin of around 3% and a net debt-to-EBITDA ratio below two times.
Among the contracts highlighted since the end of last year were the Santos-Guaruja immersed tunnel concession in Brazil, a €113 million Petrobras contract and an exclusivity agreement with Trafigura for the sale of carbon credits in Malawi.
