The SNPVAC will go ahead with a seven-day strike notice at TAP between January 25 and 31, according to a note sent to members.

Portugal’s national flag-carrier airline TAP management has said that it respects and regrets the decision of the national civil aviation flight crews union (SNPVAC) to go on strike this month and has assured that it is doing everything it can to reach an agreement.

The SNPVAC will go ahead with a seven-day strike notice at TAP between January 25 and 31, according to a note sent to members.

“We respect and regret the SNPVAC’s decision and continue to do everything possible to reach an agreement that serves the best interests of the country, our customers, cabin crew and TAP,” said an official source from the airline.

According to the union’s statement, “in compliance with what was decided at the emergency general meeting on December 6, point 2”, which defined the “scheduling of a minimum of five days of strike action to take place until January 31 on dates defined by the union leaders and communicated to members 24 hours before the strike notice was received”, the chairman of the general meeting of the trade union structure said that “it was informed by the SNPVAC management that a seven (7) day strike notice will be given tomorrow, corresponding to the 25th to 31st of January, inclusive”.

“I call, from now on, for everyone to join so that, once again, we can give full notice to the company of our unity around the discontentment regarding the matters addressed and deliberated on the 3 November general meeting, which constitute our legitimate and responsible demands,” he said in the same statement.

On 29 December, the general meeting of the SNPVAC rejected TAP’s proposal, maintaining its intention to hold a five-day strike until 31 January, a union source told Lusa at the time.

The company’s proposal was rejected, with 615 votes against, six in favour and one abstention, maintaining the possibility of going ahead with a five-day strike until 31 January, as had been decided at the last SNPVAC meeting.

It should be recalled that this union held a strike of TAP crew members on December 8 and 9, which led the airline to previously cancel 360 flights and had a total estimated impact of eight million euros.
