Sky opens new tech hub in Funchal
The British company aims to recruit 100 employees by 2023, 15% of which in Funchal.
Present in Portugal since 2012 and with a team already exceeding 400 employees, Sky will inaugurate a new technology development hub in Funchal this Thursday, reinforcing its focus in the country. The new space opens with 20 people, but the company intends to recruit 15 more people in Funchal over the next year. Sky estimates hiring 100 new professionals in Portugal by 2023, ECO knows.
“The choice of Funchal as Sky Portugal’s base for the Madeira region results from a combination of several factors, from the fact that we started with a small local team that ended up growing with the existence of highly qualified technical talent in the region and, more recently, a reinforcement of our commitment in strengthening ties with the University of Madeira,” explains Marina Magro, Director of Strategy and Operations at Sky Portugal.
“Our new office in Funchal represents a natural extension of Sky Portugal’s global team, which works daily with teams based in Lisbon or Aveiro to develop the technology platforms of Sky and NBCUniversal’s streaming products, SkyShowtime and Peacock, respectively. I highlight the teams already established here at our Funchal hub in the areas of application development for TV (Roku) and Mobile (iOS and Android),” she added.
Asked about the amount of investment involved, the general director said the company does not disclose these figures. “We are committed to the country and Funchal, so our goal is for these to be the foundations for a long presence of the company in the Archipelago,” she stated.
With about 430 employees, the technology company intends to maintain the growth trend registered in recent years in 2023. It plans to fill 100 positions in the engineering area. “With a view to these objectives, we are actively recruiting for all our locations, Lisbon, Aveiro and Funchal,” says Marina Magro.
