"At the end of July 277,466 people were registered with the IEFP, the lowest figure since records began," Portugal's Institute of Employment and Vocational Training (IEFP) announced on Tuesday.

The number of people registered as out of work with Portugal’s Institute of Employment and Vocational Training (IEFP) at the end of July was the lowest on record, the institution said in its latest monthly report, released on Tuesday.

“At the end of July 277,466 people were registered with the IEFP, the lowest figure since records began, representing a decrease of 4,987 fewer people compared to June and 91,238 fewer compared to last year,” the release reads.

It adds that in March 2021 – “at the peak of the pandemic” – there were 432,851 people registered as jobless with the IEFP, of which 50,906 were young people.

But at the end of July this year, just 26,670 under-25s were registered as unemployed – also a record low and down 1,100 or 4.0% on June and 12,071 or 31.2% year on year. Against July 2019, before the pandemic, youth unemployment was down 1,819 or 6.4%.
