CEO of Madoqua Renewables says that "Portugal will be the first country in the world to produce green ammonia on an industrial scale" and that it will be able to supply other countries.

By the end of 2026, the Portuguese-Dutch consortium MadoquaPower2X hopes to export green ammonia, a biofuel produced from renewable hydrogen, from the port of Sines. In an interview with Jornal de Negócios (paid access), the CEO of Portuguese company Madoqua Renewables says that “Portugal will be the first country in the world to produce green ammonia on an industrial scale” and that it will be able to refuel other countries.

The project has a total investment of €1 billion and envisages the construction of 500 MW of electrolysers, which will allow to produce 50,000 tonnes of green hydrogen and 500,000 tonnes of green ammonia per year. The sum also includes solar and wind production and the infrastructure to bring this energy to Sines.

“Then we can supply the ships that go to Rotterdam, where there are storage tanks. But also to Sweden, North or South America And Portugal’s importance will increase,” says Roger Rebelo, CEO of Madoqua, in an interview with Negócios. By the end of 2022, the goal is to have everything ready to license the project.
