Madeira airport closed due to high winds
The Portuguese Institute of Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has placed the north and south coasts of Madeira under yellow warning due to forecasts of strong wind.
The strong wind is affecting landings and takeoffs at Madeira International Airport with three flights diverted to Porto Santo and one had to return to Lisbon, an airport source said on Monday.
By 10:50 am this Monday, this weather situation, which has been affecting operations since Sunday, had not allowed the arrival of flights from Porto Santo (Binter), Lisbon (TAP), Paris (Transavia) and Zurich (Edelweiss) and the corresponding departures.
Of these connections, the TAP flight eventually returned to its origin and the others are waiting at the airport on the island of Porto Santo, said the same source told Lusa.
The remaining scheduled flights appear on the Aeroportos de Portugal (ANA) website with expected delays.
A Tui plane coming from Manchester is “circling” around Madeira, “waiting for a possible opening” and reduction in wind speed to try and land.
“Once again we are having the wind problem and it should continue during the day,” the airport source said.
