Gabriel Bernardino resigned as chairman of the market regulator for health reasons. He will remain in office until the Minister of Finance appoints a replacement.

Gabriel Bernardino presented this Monday his resignation as president of the Securities Market Commission (CMVM), citing health reasons, when he had taken office only four months ago, according to information gathered by ECO. The CMVM has already confirmed the news. Bernardino will remain in office until the Ministry of Finance designates a substitute.

In question are health problems that are not new, but that have lately prevented Gabriel Bernardino, 57 years old, from exercising his functions.

After the release of this information, the CMVM confirmed Gabriel Bernardino’s resignation request to the Minister of Finance, with a message from himself:

“It was with a heavy heart that I addressed today to the Minister of State and Finance my resignation as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the CMVM, requesting my replacement in as short a time as possible, considering the health reasons that justify the decision. A health problem that has been increasingly affecting me, and which has not been allowing me the total dedication and commitment that I consider essential for the leadership that CMVM deserves and needs, both at national and international level”.

Former president of the European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Supervisory Authority (EIOPA) in the last decade, Gabriel Bernardino took office as CMVM president on November 15th last year, replacing Gabriela Figueiredo Dias.
