Decline in industrial output in January 2nd-largest in euro zone, EU

According to Eurostat, Portugal in January saw the second largest month-on-month and year-on-year declines in industrial production in the euro zone and European Union.

Portugal in January saw the second largest month-on-month and year-on-year declines in industrial production in the euro zone and European Union as a whole, at 5.0% and 4.2% respectively, according to the EU statistical service.

The Eurostat release, which contains seasonally adjusted figures, shows that industrial production in the euro zone was unchanged in January, leaving it down 1.3% on January of 2021, while in the EU as a whole it was up 0.4% on the month and on the year.

The biggest year-on-year declines in industrial production were in Ireland (-20%), Portugal (-4.2%) and Malta (-3.8%) while the largest increases were in Lithuania (24.7%), Austria (17.3%) and Poland (16.6%).

Estonia had the largest month-on-month decline (-6.1%) folowed by Portugal (-5.0%) and Greece (-4.1%). The largest increases were seen in Austria (6.2%), the Czech Republic (3.1%) and Poland (3%).
