Unemployment rate stood at 6% in January

The working population (5,184,100) decreased by 0.2% compared to December but increased by 0.3% compared to October and 3.5% compared to January of last year.

The country’s unemployment stood at 6% in January, representing a decrease of one percentage point (p.p.) compared to the same month of 2021, but an increase of 0.2 p.p. compared to December, according to Statistics Portugal (INE) this Wednesday.

According to the monthly employment and unemployment estimates, published by Statistics Portugal (INE), in January, “the unemployment rate stood at 6.0%, up 0.2 p.p. [percentage points] from the previous month, 0.4 p.p. less than three months earlier and 1.0 p.p. less than a year earlier”.

In the month under review, the working population (5,184,100) decreased by 0.2% compared to December but increased by 0.3% compared to October and 3.5% compared to January of last year.

The employed population (4,875,500) decreased by 0.4% compared to the previous month but increased by 0.7% compared to three months earlier and 4.7% compared to January 2021.

In the opposite direction, the unemployed population (308,600) increased concerning the previous month (1.9%) and decreased concerning three months before (6.4%) and to the same month of 2021 (12.2%).

The inactive population (2,486,300) fell in relation to the three comparison periods: 0.1%, 1.1% and 6.8%, respectively.

Finally, the labour underutilisation rate stood at 11.7% in January, which is 0.3 percentage points higher than in December, the same as three months earlier, and 2.3 percentage points lower than in the same month last year.
