At the end of 2020, there were at least 1,365 pending claims in administrative courts for damages asserted against the state amounted to €4.5 billion.

The amount pending in the administrative courts as compensation for non-contractual civil liability lawsuits against the state reached €4.5 billion at the end of 2020, according to the latest summary report of the Public Prosecutor’s Office. This is the highest amount in five years and concerns at least 1,365 claims, reports Público.

The requests awaiting decision have been rising year on year, with a significant jump recorded at the end of 2018. Until that year, there were 788 pending claims, in 2019 they increased to 1,415, dropping slightly at the end of 2020 to 1,365 claims.

However, the track record of decisions made by administrative courts shows that the overwhelming majority of the claims asserted are dismissed by judges and that, when they give reason to those who consider themselves injured, the compensation awarded is substantially lower than that requested.
