Covid-19 cause in 10% of deaths in 2021

Last year saw 1,353 more deaths recorded overall than in 2020, an increase of 1.1%, and 12,741 more than in 2019, the year before the Covid-19 pandemic, representing an increase of 11.3%.

Covid-19 was considered as the cause of death of 12,004 people in Portugal in 2021, corresponding to 9.6% of the 125,032 deaths recorded in the country during the year, according to data released on Friday by the National Statistics Institute (INE).

Last year saw 1,353 more deaths recorded overall than in 2020, an increase of 1.1%, and 12,741 more than in 2019, the year before the Covid-19 pandemic, representing an increase of 11.3%.

In 2020 a total of 6,972 people were recorded of dying from Covid-19, corresponding to 5.6% of the total 123,679 deaths that year.

In December 2021, the number of deaths attributed to Covid-19 – the disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus – was at 518 more than double the 222 who died of Covid-19 in November, but a far cry from the 2,395 in December 2020, down 78.3% reduction.
