The Portuguese company announced on Wednesday the start of two new 70 MW (Megawatt) wind farms in Italy, increasing EDPR's installed capacity in the country to 385 MW.

EDP Renováveis announced on Wednesday the start of two new 70 MW (Megawatt) wind farms in Italy, increasing the company’s installed capacity in the country to 385 MW.

In a statement, the EDP group said that the 25 MW Monte Mattina wind farm and the 45 MW Sant’Alessandro wind farm “will reduce approximately 86,000 tons of CO2 [carbon dioxide] emissions per year and produce enough energy to supply more than 58,000 homes.

With seven 3.6 MW wind turbines each, Monte Mattina wind farm is in the Campania region, where EDPR already had an installed capacity of 35 MW, now reaching 60 MW.

The Sant’Alessandro wind farm has 13 3.45 MW wind turbines located in the Basilicata region, where the company increased its installed capacity from 171 MW to 226 MW.

The commissioning of these two projects increases EDPR’s operational capacity in Italy to 385 MW, of which around 100 MW have been connected to the grid this year.

“The commissioning of these two wind farms reaffirms our focus on the Italian market and contributes to consolidating our portfolio in the country,” said the chief executive officer (CEO) of EDP and EDP Renováveis, quoted in the statement.

“We are committed to being a pivotal player in the promotion of green energy in this market, which is expected to grow significantly in the next decade,” adds Miguel Stilwell d’Andrade.

According to EDPR, the world’s fourth-largest renewable energy producer, “these projects are aligned with the company’s commitment to energy transition and the intention to invest around €19bn, as part of its strategic plan, to implement close to 20 GW [Gigawatt] of renewable energy by 2025”.
