The country will boost its direct support for the state budget of Cape Verde by €100,000, bringing total aid for the current year to a total of €600,000.

Portugal will boost its direct support for the state budget of Cape Verde by €100,000, bringing total aid for the current year to €600,000, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) announced Monday.

According to the government statement, “this is an exceptional boost, in response to the appeal made by the Cape Verdean government and also in line with the conclusions of the Cape Verde Budget Support Group, which Portugal is a member of as a partner.

The government explains that Cape Verde has been one of the countries most affected by the socio-economic consequences of the pandemic, very particularly in tourism, a sector that has been the main catalyst of the country’s economic development.

“To deal with this impact, the Cape Verdean authorities have been adopting a package of economic, social and health measures to mitigate the effects of the pandemic,” the Portuguese Government acknowledges.

“However, the continuation of the pandemic situation in the world brings added budgetary challenges for the Cape Verdean executive, particularly for economic recovery, social protection and strengthening of the health system, which must be responded to,” concludes the MFA.
