According to provisional data revealed by the Algarve Hotels and Tourism Developments Association (AHETA), the volume of sales increased by 45.6% in September this year.

Sales in hotel accommodation in the Algarve grew 45.6% in September compared to the same period in 2020, with an overall average occupancy rate of 64.1%, the Algarve’s largest hotel association said on Wednesday.

According to provisional data revealed by the Algarve Hotels and Tourism Developments Association (AHETA), the volume of sales increased by 45.6% in September this year, compared to the same month of 2020, but was down 21.9% compared to the same period in 2019.

However, AHETA pointed out, sales made through online platforms do not include payment of the respective commissions, which influences the year-on-year increase in sales volume and, therefore, the prices charged.

In September this year, 15.4% of sales were made through traditional tour operators, a figure that compares with 40% in 2019.

According to data advanced by AHETA in the summary of the monthly evolution of the sector’s activity, the overall average occupancy rate per room was 64.1%, an increase of 33.8% compared to the same month last year, but 26.3% below the figure recorded in 2019.

The domestic market grew by 55.1% and the external market decreased by 50.2% compared to September 2019, with the largest decreases recorded in Albufeira (-33.1%), Carvoeiro/Armação de Pêra (-24.8%) and Portimão/Praia da Rocha (-23.5%).

According to the association of hoteliers in the district of Faro, in accumulated terms, since the beginning of the year, there is an average decrease of 54.1% in occupancy per room and 46% in sales volume, compared to 2019.

AHETA said that the averages are not reflected equally in all establishments, with discrepancies depending on the categories and geographical areas.
