VW’s Autoeuropa plant to restart vehicle production on Tuesday evening
The factory of German group Volkswagen announced the stoppage on Saturday, indicating that it led to the cancellation of 95 shifts and the loss of 28,860 vehicles.
Autoeuropa will resume production on Tuesday evening, with the shift that starts at 23:40, after a shutdown due to a shortage of semiconductors, the official source of the company told Lusa.
The factory of German group Volkswagen announced the stoppage on Saturday, indicating that it led to the cancellation of 95 shifts and the loss of 28,860 vehicles.
Faced with successive stoppages due to the lack of components since the start of the pandemic, Autoeuropa’s management announced last week that it intends to resort to the “economic activity support programme” and guarantee salaries for each company employee.
The automotive industry has been one of the most affected by the lack of semiconductors, components that are largely supplied by several Asian manufacturers, which have maintained lockdown measures due to Covid-19.
The vaccination process on the Asian continent is quite late, compared to what is happening in the more developed Western countries.
The Palmela car plant currently produces the MPV and T-Roc models. With over 5,000 employees, 98% of whom are on a permanent contract, Autoeuropa produced a total of 192,000 cars and 20 million parts for other factories of the German group in 2020, which represent 1.4% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and 4.7% of Portuguese exports.
