Passenger movement at national airports still 76% below pre-pandemic levels

National airports handled around four million passengers in the second quarter, down 76% compared to the same period in 2019, INE reveals.

Passenger movement at Portuguese airports fell 76% in Q2 2021 compared to the same period of 2019, to a total of 4 million passengers, according to the statistics of transport activities, released this Wednesday by Statistics Portugal (INE).

Looking at the main national airports, Lisbon airport handled 1.8 million passengers in the second quarter of this year, which represents a 78.7% drop compared to the same quarter of 2019. As for the Porto airport, it was down 74.3% in relation to the pre-pandemic period. However, it was Faro that registered the largest decreased compared to 2019 (-82.5%).

The airports in the autonomous regions were the ones that suffered the least impact. The airports of Funchal and Ponta Delgada recorded the smallest decreases compared to 2019 (-64.6% and -56.6% in Q2 2021, respectively).
