Airports handle 1.3M passengers in May, 77.1% fewer than May 2019

Cargo and mail movements totalled 16,200 tonnes in May, after also being virtually non-existent in May 2020. Compared to May 2019, cargo and mail movement decreased by 10.6%.

Domestic airports received 1.3 million passengers in May, after May 2020 saw virtually no traffic at airports, 77.1% less than in the same month of 2019.

According to the rapid statistics of air transport, released on Tuesday by the Statistics Portugal (INE), the month of May thus maintained the trend of growth in air transport, but still far from the same period of 2019.

Cargo and mail movements totalled 16,200 tonnes in May, after also being virtually non-existent in May 2020. Compared to May 2019, cargo and mail movement decreased by 10.6%.

INE points out that between May 17 and 31, 2021, 60% of total passengers landed at national airports that month, of which 25.5% were on flights from the United Kingdom.

The announcement of the opening of the air corridor between Portugal and the United Kingdom on May 17 generated a visible increase in the number of passengers disembarking from that day.

Faro airport had 55.4% of passengers arriving on flights from the UK between May 17 and 31.

In May this year 8,600 aircraft landed at national airports on commercial flights, a 58.9% decrease compared to May 2019.
