Censos2021 shows population shrank by 214,000 since 2011

According to INE, in census terms, the only other decade in which there was a decrease in population was between 1960 and 1970.

Portugal has today 10,347,892 residents, 214,286 fewer than in 2011, according to the preliminary results of the 2021 census, released today by Statistics Portugal (INE).

Preliminary data shows that there are 4,917,794 men (48%) and 5,430,098 women (52%) in Portugal.

The collection phase of the 2021 Census took place between 5 April, and 31 May and the data refers to the date of the census moment, April 19.
