Ricardo Salgado’s trial begins with former BES accountant

The former chairman of BES has been charged with three crimes of abuse of trust, in a related and separate process of Operation Marquês. 

The trial of former banker Ricardo Salgado began on Tuesday at the Central Criminal Court of Lisbon, with the hearing of the first witness, Machado da Cruz, BES accountant between 2004 and 2014.

Thirty minutes after the scheduled time, the trial of Ricardo Salgado began on Tuesday at 2h30 p.m. with the hearing of 62-year-old​​​​​​​ Francisco António Machado da Cruz.

Machado da Cruz told the court he worked in the Espírito Santo Group, where he was responsible for accounting for a decade, between 2004 and 2014.

77-year-old Ricardo Salgado​​​​​​​ again failed to appear on Tuesday at the Campus da Justiça, where at the third attempt the trial began, in which he is charged with three crimes of abuse of trust, due to transfers of more than €10 million as part of the Operação Marquês process.

In addition to Tuesday’s session, judge Francisco Henriques has scheduled sessions until the end of September.
