"We have estimates that go until mid-July which point to beyond 4,000 new cases and with hospitalisations beyond 800 and intensive care beyond 150," the Portuguese government announced.

The Government estimates that the number of new cases of people infected with the coronavirus could reach about 4,000 daily in the coming weeks, doubling the current trend of almost 2,000 infected, warned the Health Minister.

“We have estimates that go until mid-July which point to beyond 4,000 new cases and with hospitalisations beyond 800 and intensive care beyond 150”, Marta Temido stressed on Monday evening in an interview with TVI.

“At this rate of growth, we will, in 15 days, double the number of cases, that is, instead of having the 2,000 we had today, we will have about 4,000, with regional variations, but we will tend to double the cases in the whole country”, she stressed.

On Monday, Portugal exceeded 600 hospital admissions with the entry of 46 more people, on a day with five deaths attributed to covid-19 and 1,493 new cases of infection by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, according to the national health authority (DGS).

The incidence of infection with the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus in mainland Portugal continues to rise, and currently stands at 231 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, as well as in the whole country, which is now 224.6, official data shows.

In Portugal, since the start of the pandemic in March 2020, 17,117 people have died and 890,571 cases of infection have been recorded, according to the DGS.
