Portugal had been off the list of countries considered safe by the German authorities since June 29.

The German authorities have eased restrictions on travel from Portugal, reports AFP. Berlin had removed Portugal from the list of safe countries on June 29.

The German state no longer considers Portugal to be an “area of variant concern” but rather an “area of high incidence”. The same decision was taken for India, Russia and the United Kingdom.

The change, which allows travel between the two countries to resume, applies from Wednesday, July 7, according to information released by the Robert Koch Institute. Travelling had been forbidden since June 29, except for Germans or resident citizens, implying a 14-day quarantine.

With this new classification, someone returning to Germany after a stay in Portugal will still have to present a negative Covid-19 test, proof of vaccination or proof of recovery from Covid-19. This proof has to be obtained before entering Germany and is presented to the airline before departure.

Otherwise, a 10-day quarantine is necessary. However, this quarantine can end earlier by testing negative for Covid-19 after five days.
