Media company in deal with CNN to create CNN Portugal

Media Capital announced that "on this date, the subsidiary TVI" and CNN "signed a memorandum of understanding for a licensing agreement that foresees the creation of CNN Portugal."

Media Capital has signed a memorandum of understanding with CNN for a licensing agreement to set up CNN Portugal, the TVI owner announced on Monday.

In a statement sent to CMVM, Media Capital said that “on this date, the subsidiary TVI” and CNN (Turner Broadcasting System Europe group) “signed a memorandum of understanding for a licensing agreement that foresees the creation of CNN Portugal.”

The channel, he adds, “will be programmed and operated by Media Capital under licence from CNN, which will also provide training, consultancy and access to content from CNN’s entire portfolio.”

According to the group led by Mário Ferreira, “with this agreement, a new chapter is opened in the history of television in Portugal as it is a partnership with one of the most innovative, influential and prestigious television channels worldwide”.

Media Capital underlines that CNN “is a top global reference in rigorous, free and independent information” and the group “shares these values and considers this agreement and the success of this partnership to be of the utmost relevance for the future of the Portuguese audiovisual sector.”

It further added that “after the discussion phase with the regulatory authorities and the conclusion of the implementation process of this new project, complying with legal and regulatory procedures, Media Capital will provide all updates and information on this project which gives prestige to Portugal and the Portuguese language.”
