Country’s industrial output in January suffers largest YoY drop in EU

In January, Portugal suffered the EU's second-largest month-on-month drop in industrial production at 1.3%.

Portugal in January suffered the European Union’s second-largest month-on-month drop in industrial production, at 1.3%, and the largest year-on-year drop, at 6.5%, as the euro-zone and EU as a whole both saw overall increases in output, figures released on Friday by the EU’s statistics office, Eurostat, show.

In January, industrial production in the euro-zone increased by 0.8% on the month and in the EU by 0.7%, with output up 0.1% and 0.3% respectively on the year earlier.

According to Eurostat, the most marked month-on-month increases were in Luxembourg (3.8%), Greece and France (both 3.4%) and Belgium (3.1%), while the largest declines were in Estonia and Latvia (-.5%), Portugal (-1.3%) and Spain (-0.7%).

In year-on-year terms, the biggest increases in industrial production were in Ireland (27.5%), Lithuania (11.8%) and Poland (5.6%) and the largest decreases in Portugal (-6.5%), Malta (-6.2%) and Slovakia (-4.0%).
