Retail sales in January fall 10.9%, third largest in EU YoY

According to data from the European statistics office, retail sales fell in January in the eurozone and the European Union (EU), with Portugal recording the third-largest year-on-year drop.

Retail sales fell in January in the eurozone and the European Union (EU), with Portugal recording the third-largest year-on-year drop, of 10.9%, Eurostat reported on Thursday.

According to data from the European statistics office, compared to January 2020, the volume of retail sales fell by 6.4% in the eurozone and 5.4% in the EU.

Compared to December, retail sales fell by 5.9% in the eurozone and 5.1% in the EU.

Year-on-year, the biggest declines in retail sales were observed in Austria and Slovakia (-16.8%), Slovenia (-13.0%) and Portugal (-10.9%), while the main increases were observed in Estonia (8.0%), Belgium (4.2%) and Finland (3.8%).

Compared to December, Austria (-16.6%), Ireland (-15.7%) and Slovakia (-11.1%) recorded the main decreases in retail sales and Sweden (3.5%), Bulgaria (1.8%) and Estonia (1.7%).

In Portugal, retail sales fell by 4.8% from December to January.
