Covid-19: Portugal reports highest daily toll of 218 deaths
The number of people infected with coronavirus continues to increase and, in the last 24 hours, there have been 10,455 new cases.
There are 10,455 new cases of coronavirus compared to Monday, bringing the total number of people infected with the disease to 566,958. 218 people have died in the last 24 hours, a new high according to the latest report from the Directorate-General for Health (DGS).
In this context, Portugal is passing for the first time the barrier of 200 deaths in one day. This means that in the last 24 hours alone more deaths were recorded than between March 2 – the day that Covid-19 was first identified in the country – and April 2 (209 deaths in total). Of these 218 deaths, 88 were in the Lisbon and Tagus Valley region, 55 in the Centro region, 51 in the North, 17 in Alentejo, five in Algarve and two in Madeira.
There are now 135,841 people (active cases) fighting the disease, 45 less than in the previous balance. Most new infections have been recorded in Lisbon and the Tagus Valley. Of the 10,455 new confirmed cases, 5,012 are located in this region (about 48%), followed by the North region, which recorded 2,970 new infections (28.4%).
As for Portugal’s clinical situation, most infected people are recovering at home. Nevertheless, the figures still reveal the pressure being exerted on hospitals, which are close to the limit. One day after Portugal crossed the 5,000-patient barrier, the figures continue to rise. There are now 5,291 people in the hospital (126 more than the previous day), 670 of them in intensive care units (6 more).
