More than half of excess deaths during pandemic attributed to Covid-19

According to the Statistics Portugal (INE), deaths associated with Covid-19 accounted for 52% of the excess mortality in Portugal between March and December last year

Deaths associated with Covid-19 accounted for 52% of the excess mortality in Portugal between March and December last year, the Statistics Portugal (INE) announced on Friday.

According to the INE’s bulletin on mortality because of the pandemic, from March 2 – the date of the first case diagnosed with the new coronavirus – until December 27, 99,356 people died, an increase of 12,852 deaths compared to the average for the same months from 2015 to 2019.

Of these 12,852 additional deaths, 6,677 were attributed to Covid-19, equivalent to 52%. Between November 30 and December 27 alone, 2,172 people died of Covid-19, a number that exceeds the increase of 1,884 deaths in relation to the average for the same period in the last five years.
