“Portugal has very favourable climate for business, investment” – Huawei

Huawei's Vice-President for Europe, Abraham Liu, said that Portugal is among the countries that have provided "a very favourable environment for business".

Huawei’s Vice-President for Europe, Abraham Liu, said in an interview with Lusa that Portugal is among the countries that have provided “a very favourable environment for business” and is therefore an investment destination to be considered.

“Portugal is among those that have provided a very favourable environment for business,” said the Huawei’s top representative to the EU institutions.

“In history, [Portugal] is famous for its global collaboration,” he said, which is in line with Huawei’s vision.

“For example, we are a global company, we benefit from global collaboration and now we are exploring another dimension, which is a cutting-edge technology,” like 5G or Artificial Intelligence (AI), which will “contribute to the transformation of society or industrial economic transformation”.

Huawei’s Vice-President for Europe highlighted the role of the Chinese subsidiary in Portugal over the 16 years it has been present in the market, particularly in the pandemic.

“The infrastructure we built together played a unique role” during the pandemic, he said.

“I think Portugal is a favourable destination for investment,” he reiterated, noting that there are “attractive aspects” and “many, many reasons for any foreign investor to consider.

Asked if he would invest more in Portugal, Abraham Liu did not rule out the idea.

He stressed that in conversations with different industry leaders he noted that the automobile sector had a large supply chain in Portugal.

Abraham Liu also highlighted the fact that Portugal is “very active in terms of the future of the energy industry”, referring to the ‘green deal’, which is part of the European Green Pact.

“I think they have shaped a competitive industry,” he said, pointing out that it is a “valuable consideration (…) for any international company” that wants to invest, including Huawei.
