In the last 24 hours 7,497 new cases of coronavirus have been identified in Portugal, the highest daily number since the beginning of the pandemic.

These are the highest daily numbers since the pandemic arrived in the country. In the last 24 hours, the Directorate General of Health (DGS) has identified 7,497 new cases of Covid-19, the vast majority in the northern region of the country, and 59 deaths. The total number of infections is now 156,940.

“The data presented in today’s report include the addition of 3,570 cases, resulting from the delay in laboratory reporting, mainly from a laboratory in the Northern region, since October 30,” says the DGS daily report.

The North is the region with the most registered cases so far – 72,875 cases of infection and 1,206 deaths – and this region is responsible for over 5,000 new cases that have been registered in the last 24 hours.

Of the total number of infected, most are undergoing treatment at home, with 2,337 inpatients, 325 of them in intensive care units. There are over 65,000 under the surveillance of the health authorities.

Since it was detected in Portugal at the beginning of March, the coronavirus has caused the death of 2,694 people, 59 of them in the last 24 hours.
