Portugal is the 5th EU country with the most people employed in the air transport
Employees in the air transport sector in Portugal were around 16,000 in 2019, according to Eurostat data.
Portugal is one of the European Union countries where more people are employed in the air transport sector, one of the areas most affected by the new coronavirus pandemic. Last year, around 0.4% of all national workers were in this area, placing the country in fifth place in the European table.
Employees in the aviation sector in Portugal were around 16,000 in 2019, according to Eurostat data released this Monday, which corresponds to 0.4 percent of all workers. Ahead of Portugal are countries such as Ireland and the Netherlands, with Luxembourg standing out as having 1% of workers in air transport.
In 2019, 408,000 people aged 20-64 were employed in the air transport sector in the European Union, an increase of 11% compared to 2018. These workers represent 0.2% of total employment in the EU, according to the EU statistics office.
Eurostat also notes that most air transport workers were male (56%). The highest proportion of men was registered in Sweden (77%), followed by Denmark (74%). Finland is the only Member State where women predominate in this sector (57%).
