Welcome BPI, farewell Novo Banco. Portuguese national football team's new sponsor is Spanish.

Novo Banco was Portugal’s sponsor when the Portuguese team took home the winner’s title of UEFA’s European championship. This year, the bank took them to the first knockout round of the competition in the Russian World Cup.

Based on the information we gathered at ECO, Portugal will have the support of a new sponsor from the banking sector: BPI. BPI is owned by the Spanish capital bank, Caixa Bank, chaired by Pablo Forero.

After the World Cup in Russia, in which the Portuguese got through the group phase only to get defeated by Uruguay in the First knockout round, the sponsorship contract between the Portuguese team and Novo Banco ended.

The new sponsorship contract is due to last up until Qatar’s World Cup in 2022

The Spanish capital bank gathered today with the Portuguese national team and the Portuguese Football Federation to sign the four-year sponsorship contract. The values of the support are not yet known. BPI was contacted by ECO but refused to comment.

Remember that BPI’s owner, CaixaBank, besides sponsoring the Portuguese team is now also supporting the national Spanish team. It has become an exclusive financial partner of both of their female and male Spanish national teams, until 2024.

UEFA’s European Championship doesn’t have yet an official location; that information will only be released in September.
