Consumer trust and economic climate reach maximums of May

The consumer confidence indicator increased in May, for the third consecutive month and to the highest value of the series.

The consumer confidence indicator increased in May, for the third consecutive month and to the highest value of the series. The economic climate indicator also increased, to a maximum since May of 2002, according to Statistics Portugal (INE).

According to INE’s data, consumer confidence indicator increased from the 2.4 points in April to 3.3 points in May, “reaching the maximum amount of the series”. As for the economic climate indicator, estimated by inquiries to companies from different activity sectors, increased in May to 2.3 points, after having stabilized, in April, at 2.1 points, “reaching maximums since May of 2002”.

INE signals that, in May, confidence indicators increased in construction and public works, as well as in commerce and services. It decreases in the transforming industry.

“The increase of the Consumer confidence indicator in May reflected the positive contributions of expectations on the evolution of the unemployment and on household’s financial situation, more intense in the former case”, INE states.
